The Nairobi Metropolitan Transport Authority (NaMATA) was established by the Government of Kenya in 2017 through an Executive Order, Legal Notice No. 18 of 2017, to address the growing urban transportation challenges within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area (NMA).
NaMATA is an autonomous agency with the mandate to oversee the development, implementation, and management of an efficient, effective, and integrated public transport system.
The NMA which encompasses the counties of Nairobi City, Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado, and Murang’a, extends over 32,000 km and has a population of 10.4 million people.
