Overview

On September 12, 2024, the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NaMATA), in collaboration with the Kenya Forest Service, planted 1,000 mangrove trees near the Dongo Kundu Bridge in Mombasa. This initiative, graced by Chief Guest Mr. Chimwaga Mongo EBS, Secretary for Administration, State Department for Roads, underscores NaMATA’s commitment to environmental conservation. The event was also attended by Joab Logemere, NaMATA’s Director of Corporate Services.

Why Mangroves Matter

• Coastal Protection: Acting as natural barriers, mangroves shield the coastline from storm surges, high waves, and erosion.
• Ecological Benefits: They provide a vital habitat for diverse marine and terrestrial species, supporting fisheries and biodiversity.

Reversing Decades of Unsustainable Practices

For years, Mombasa’s mangrove forests faced significant decline due to unsustainable harvesting for building materials and other uses. NaMATA’s initiative aims to restore these ecosystems, ensuring their benefits are preserved for future generations while also promoting sustainable community livelihoods.
