BUS RAPID TRANSIT

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a high-capacity bus system providing fast, reliable, and cost-effective services. In 2019, the Nairobi Metropolitan Area (NMA) Council gazetted five BRT corridors:

BRT Line Overview

Limuru → Kangemi → CBD → Imara Daima → Athi River → Kitengela

Line 1 (Ndovu) Overview:

Line 1 runs parallel to the Nairobi Expressway. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) plans to implement BRT infrastructure alongside the expressway, with preliminary designs shared but no concrete timeline yet.

Line 2 (Simba)

Rongai → Bomas → CBD → Ruiru → Thika → Kenol

Line 2 (Simba) Overview:

The government is upgrading the Thika Superhighway to accommodate BRT. The project, in two phases, covers 28km from Ruiru to Kenyatta National Hospital.

Line 3 (Chui)

Tala → Njiru → Dandora → CBD → Showground → Ngong

Line 3 (Chui) Overview:

Line 3 is divided into three phases:

  • Phase I (13km): Dandora → CBD → Kenyatta National Hospital. Detailed designs are complete, proposing a closed system with feeder services, 14 stations, and 120 electric buses.
  • Phase II (20.8km): Kenyatta National Hospital → Ngong.
  • Phase III (52km): Dandora → Tala.

Mama Lucy Hospital → Donholm → CBD → T Mall → Bomas → Karen → Kikuyu

Line 4 (Kifaru) Overview:

Aligned with the Fourth Medium Term Plan and the Ministry of Roads and Transport strategic plan, BRT Line 4 aims to decongest Nairobi. The project, supported by the African Development Bank, includes:

  • Detailed design update for the eastern section (Mama Lucy → CBD).
  • Pre-feasibility study for the western section (CBD → Kikuyu).
  • Capacity building and other support activities.

Ridgeways → Balozi → Imara Daima

Line 5 (Nyati) Overview:

BRT Line 5 on Outering Road will utilize 30 high-capacity buses, transporting 4,200 passengers per hour per direction during peak hours. This line aims to reduce traffic congestion and provide efficient, reliable transport. With dedicated lanes for BRT buses, travel times will be faster and more predictable, benefiting commuters and improving the overall traffic flow.
