The Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NaMATA) hosted a two-day coordination workshop to develop a curriculum aimed at enhancing capacity in the public transport sector within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area. This initiative was supported by World Resources International (WRI) and the European Union-funded Institutional Support for the Kenyan Transport Sector (ISKTS), implemented by NTU International.
Collaborative Efforts Toward Public Transport Training
The workshop brought together developmental partners, stakeholders, and agencies to design and review the public transport sector capacity-building curriculum. Participating organizations included:
- Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP)
- Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI)
- Kenya Institute of Highways and Building Technology (KIHBT)
- Flone Initiative
- NTU International
Each organization shared training materials to align content with sector needs. Discussions revolved around the training audience, timing, and implementation processes to ensure a cohesive and effective curriculum.
Key Stakeholder Contributions
During the workshop, Mr. Wilson Tuigong, Deputy Director of Safety and Compliance at the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA), expressed interest in contributing to curriculum development for licensing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) drivers. This collaboration aims to address specific training gaps and align with international standards for public transport operations.
Action Plans and Follow-Up
Workshop participants agreed on timelines to align training materials and set the stage for future meetings. NaMATA, supported by NTU International, will coordinate the process to finalize the curriculum. The State Department of Transport pledged its support to ensure the curriculum becomes a cornerstone for improving service delivery across the public transport sector.
