Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a high-capacity bus system providing fast, reliable, and cost-effective services. In 2019, the Nairobi Metropolitan Area (NMA) Council gazetted five BRT corridors:
Line 1 runs parallel to the Nairobi Expressway. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) plans to implement BRT infrastructure alongside the expressway, with preliminary designs shared but no concrete timeline yet.
The government is upgrading the Thika Superhighway to accommodate BRT. The project, in two phases, covers 28km from Ruiru to Kenyatta National Hospital.
Line 3 is divided into three phases:
Aligned with the Fourth Medium Term Plan and the Ministry of Roads and Transport strategic plan, BRT Line 4 aims to decongest Nairobi. The project, supported by the African Development Bank, includes:
BRT Line 5 on Outering Road will utilize 30 high-capacity buses, transporting 4,200 passengers per hour per direction during peak hours. This line aims to reduce traffic congestion and provide efficient, reliable transport. With dedicated lanes for BRT buses, travel times will be faster and more predictable, benefiting commuters and improving the overall traffic flow.
